Fishing Birthday Cake

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I caught a fish alive.......

Here we have a fun fishing themed birthday cake that was ordered for a adult males birthday. It was a smaller sized cake as the order also included 24 co-ordinating cupcakes.

The cake was 3 layers of 'Blondie' (vanilla bean butter cake) with caramel Swiss meringue buttercream sandwiched in between. This was covered in homemade marshmallow fondant which I marbled in order to make it appear more sea like.  The size was a 6" round (approx 10 regular serves).

The boat, all of the items in the boat, sea creatures, seaweed & rocks were also modeled using marshmallow fondant.

The customer had told me that the birthday boy loves his tinnie so I designed the cake with that in mind & made the tinnie the main focus. I was sure to use the actual letters & numbers off his real life boat on the tinnie to make it really personalised. I added a lifesaver & an Esky inside the boat for a whimsical touch, (I love the little Esky).

The fish popping out of the water is one of my favorite parts, I used royal icing to pipe the little ripples on the water around the fish which I think looked really effective. I also used royal icing to pipe the little air bubbles coming from the mouth of the fish on the side of the cake.

Although you can't tell too well from the photos all the fish & the stingray had a shiny & sparkly finish which I achieved by using edible lustre dust.

Again I marbled the fondant for the rocks to give them a more realistic look.
